Senators need to grill Trump's AG pick




Starting tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a confirmation hearing for William Barr, President Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general. While any attorney general inherently holds immense power, the ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller -- and the threat it poses to Trump's presidency -- potentially raises the ordinarily high stakes to bet-the-republic levels. Recent revelations that the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation based on suspicions that Trump may have intended to obstruct justice when he fired then-FBI Director James Comey, and that Trump took steps to conceal details of his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, only raise the stakes when Barr faces questioning tomorrow. Given Barr's public condemnation of Mueller's work -- particularly Mueller's ongoing investigation of potential obstruction of justice by Trump -- the Senate must press hard to determine whether Barr is sufficiently impartial, independent and principled to take the mantle as attorney general.
